Native Australian Winter Flowers: The Best Blooms to Look for This Season in Perth
If you think winter is a quiet season for flowers, think again. In Perth and across Western Australia, winter is actually one of the most spectacular times of year for native Australian blooms. From June through September, local growers bring an extraordinary abundance of native stems to market, many of which are unique to this part of the world and simply unavailable at any other time of year.
At The Plumery, winter is one of our favourite seasons to create in. Here's a look at some of the native Australian flowers that shine brightest during the cooler months and why we love incorporating them into our seasonal arrangements.
Banksias
Few flowers are more distinctly Australian than the banksia. With their dramatic, elongated flower spikes in shades of amber, gold and orange, banksias add incredible texture and architectural interest to any arrangement. Several species peak in winter, making them a staple of our cooler-month designs. They're also remarkably long-lasting in the vase (a bonus for anyone who wants their flowers to last as long as possible).
Waratahs
The waratah is one of Australia's most iconic wildflowers, bold, structural and unmistakably beautiful. With their deep crimson flowerheads and dark green foliage, waratahs make a striking centrepiece in any arrangement. They're native to the east coast but well-loved across the country, and their late winter to early spring flowering season makes them a prized addition to seasonal Perth bouquets.
Kangaroo Paw
One of the most exciting blooms I grow in my garden, Kangaroo paw is one of Western Australia's most beloved natives, and for good reason. Available in a stunning range of colours, from deep burgundy and lime green to burnt orange and soft yellow, kangaroo paw adds a playful, sculptural quality that no imported flower can replicate. Their velvety texture and long stems make them a dream to work with, and they hold beautifully in both bunches and arrangements.
Flannel Flowers
For something softer and more ethereal, flannel flowers are a uniquely Australian treasure. Their velvety white petals and gentle, daisy-like form bring a light, romantic quality to any arrangement. Grown mainly in New South Wales, they're most available during late winter and spring, and their delicate appearance belies how well they hold in the vase. These beauties can be hard to get your hands on and are extremely pricey because of this but whenever I get to work with them or have them on display in my own home, it's such a treat.
Waxflower
Waxflower is a native Australian filler flower that punches well above its weight. Tiny, star-shaped blooms in white, pink and mauve cluster along woody stems, adding colour, texture and fragrance to any arrangement. It's incredibly hardy, beautifully scented and grows abundantly across Western Australia, making it one of the most sustainable choices we can make when building a winter bouquet.
Why We Love Working with Native Australian Flowers
Beyond their obvious beauty, native Australian flowers represent everything we believe in at The Plumery. They're grown here, by Australian farmers, without the environmental cost of air freight or cold-chain logistics. They're perfectly adapted to our climate, which means they often require less water and fewer inputs to grow. And they have a vase life that well exceeds most imported alternatives.
Working with what's in season also means every arrangement we create in winter genuinely looks and feels like Perth winter. It helps us connect to the natural world around us.
