Sustainable Floristry in Perth: How The Plumery Is Changing the Way We Think About Flowers

At The Plumery Florist Studio, we believe beautiful flowers and a healthier planet aren't mutually exclusive. As a small, independent florist operating from a private studio in North Perth, sustainability isn't a marketing buzzword for. It's a genuine commitment that shapes every decision we make, from the flowers we source to the way we package and deliver your order.

Here's an honest look at where we are, what we're working toward, and why it matters.

Why Sustainable Floristry Matters

The global cut flower industry has a significant environmental footprint. Most flowers sold in Australia are imported from countries like Colombia, Kenya and the Netherlands, travelling thousands of kilometres by air freight before they reach a vase. This not only generates substantial carbon emissions, but imported flowers are often grown using pesticides and synthetic fertilisers that would not be permitted under Australian agricultural standards.

At The Plumery, we've made a conscious decision to do things differently.

Sourcing: Australian-Grown Flowers Only

We are committed to sourcing only Australian-grown flowers. Every week, we visit the flower markets to hand-select the freshest seasonal stems from local growers. This means shorter supply chains, lower emissions, and blooms that are genuinely fresher when they arrive at your door.

Supporting local growers also means supporting Australian farming families and keeping money within our own economy something we're proud to stand behind.

Our goal is to use at least 90% locally sourced flowers at all times, and zero imported flowers.

Packaging: Thoughtful From the Inside Out

Flowers need protection and hydration to survive the journey from our studio to your door. But that doesn't mean single-use plastic or excessive waste.

All of our wrapping paper, tissue and ribbons are made from biodegradable materials. Our clear glass vases are designed to be reused, donated or recycled, chosen specifically for their timeless shape so they stay in circulation for longer rather than ending up in landfill.

We use biodegradable wet-wraps to keep bunches hydrated, eliminating the need for floral foam (a non-biodegradable microplastic pollutant widely used in the industry) or single-use plastic water bags.

Our packaging goals are to find a beautiful 100% recycled paper, tissue and cotton ribbon for all wrapping.  Plus source more plastic-free flowers from our wholesalers.

Deliveries: Reducing Our Carbon Footprint on the Road

As a flower delivery service, driving is a necessary part of what we do. We're transparent about that. But we're actively working to reduce the emissions associated with getting your flowers to you.

Our goal is to offset our carbon emissions to reduce our overall footprint.

Learning: The Sustainable Floristry Network

Emma is a proud 2026 member of the Sustainable Floristry Network  (SFN), an independent education organisation dedicated to creating a new standard for floristry built around sustainability principles. SFN provides florists with the education, community and tools to make meaningful change within the industry.

Being part of SFN means we're not just making promises, we're actively learning, improving and holding ourselves accountable.

Our Commitment to You

We won't pretend we've got everything figured out. Sustainable floristry is a journey, not a destination, and we're committed to being honest about both our progress and our shortcomings. What we can promise is that every decision we make considers the impact on people and the planet, not just the bottom line.

When you order from The Plumery, you're choosing flowers that are fresher, more ethical and more sustainably produced than most of what's available on the market. And that's something we think is worth celebrating.
